Cowards 03:58
We came to the water, our nature not to drink. Hard to pity the sailor afraid to sink. And it was fine. We came to the door. The door was locked. We lit our torches, then we knocked, And it was fine, fine, fine, fine. All the cowards in the house, sing out, sing out. Hold those ashes in your mouth, sing through them; sing out. Lay your shields on the ground and never go home. All the cowards in the house, forgive yourselves; sing out. Throw your hands up, throw your hands up, throw your hands up, cut them off. We were born to lick boots, and pretend it was steak. It’s not hard in this world to love what you hate. And it becomes fine, fine, fine, fine. Every flag is a mask with teeth underneath. Keep your ashes close to your chest like family.

The weather is changing, dialogue is stagey. But the intent, the intent is pure. We speak of purity, haircuts an atrocity: a reminder that every scene’s a bore. You can wave the red flag, decorate your handbag, but even the dead think consistency’s a chore. My favorite feelings are joy and contempt. In you, in you I’ve met my match. My strongest feelings are joy and contempt. In you, in you I’ve met my match. The day is long, the day is hard. It is an uncertain word we speak ‘til we’re slow dancing to this bitter earth. We’re slow dancing to this bitter earth. Heart-sleeved charmers, best not to believe. What’s convenient is rarely good. You can hate how the roads are paved eventually you live in the state. Apolitical, baby; my heart, in its fashion, is true. My strongest feelings are joy and contempt. In you, in you I’ve met my match. We’re slow dancing to this bitter earth. My strongest feelings are joy and contempt. In you, in you I’ve met my match. We’re slow dancing to this bitter earth.

Levitate the Pentagon, burn the witches from your eyes. You said you swore you saw it rise. Levitate the Pentagon, let the losers tell their side. You said you swore you saw it rise. Pain’s a secret no one keeps. You’re the lie that I believe. Hanging out outside church basements, waiting for meetings to end. Half our friends are in recovery, half our friends are dead. Well, smoking won’t get you sober, and the drugs no longer work. We’ve got coke, but no keys, no car, no home. Levitate the Pentagon, burn the witches from your eyes. You said you swore you saw it rise. Levitate the Pentagon, let the losers tell their side. You said you swore you saw it rise. Now you’re in a strip club in DC at 3 in the afternoon, trying to convince some sad refugee you’re different. But like a self-help book at the STD clinic, that ship has sailed that ship sailed, all the ships have sailed. You’ve always had a Clintonian grasp of truth and beauty. You were born to die in a better world than this one. Your tombstone will read, “I tried, I failed; only God and everyone else can and should judge me.” Levitate the Pentagon, burn the witches from your eyes. You said you swore you saw it rise. Levitate the Pentagon, let the losers tell their side. You said you swore you saw it rise.

First you’re born, more tears are still to come. A mouth of teeth, violence of the tongue. When baby cries, everybody runs. There’s a hunger that is never gone. Tell yourself that you’re good. Tell yourself that you’re kind. All the while the moon’s hanging overhead, takes the blame for the tide. In the crowd, distance is a dream. Elbows, throats, the beating of the wings. Drain the well, lower yourself down. Mock the sky, the only way to win. A mouth of teeth, sharpened by the tongue. Born into hunger, everyone, everyone. Mount the pavement, make compromise your art. Bite down on anger. Swallow up your heart. Tell yourself that you’re good. Tell yourself that you’re kind. All the while the moon’s hanging overhead, takes the blame for the tide. All the ways we’re wrong. All the ways we’re cruel. We will be released.

I love it when you talk realpolitik. “Empathy’s naïve,” is what you said. States do what is imperative; same is true with friends on the internet. “Hypocrites,” that describes everyone: they’ve got their drugs, not your idea of fun. If they cared, it would be self-evident. They know the truth, choose not to handle it. I wish you’d never gone to school. I miss you, but then I am a fool to wish you’d never gone. It’s easy to be right of it. Opposition is anarcho syndicate. Conspiracy-addled simpletons, yeah, you’re smarter than all of them. You’re a knife in a world of cutters. If only they were rational thinkers. If only they’d seen what you’ve seen. But I remember you kind when we were young. I wish you’d never gone to school. I miss you, but then I’m a fool to wish you’d never gone.

Canary 05:09 video
Canary, triumphant: miners all dead. The old town, once vibrant, now drenched in strings. An old soul, attractive in a younger man. A sad girl, an old trope, we do what we can. Too obtuse, for mystery, give me God straight. The only thing hideous about you is me, is me. I thought I heard a sigh. I thought I heard the sigh of a lesser God. But it was just children shouting, dancing in the shadows of new towers. Oh I, I thought I heard a sigh. I thought I heard the sigh of a lesser God. But it was just the grinding of the street below. Then I saw a bird’s shadow cross my window. A pay phone’s a tribute to the breathing hard: Totemic, and winking, to the obsolete. If water surrounds you, it’s the island that’s out of place. If mountains move towards you, let the tears, let the tears, let the tears of joy cover your face. No esoterics, no failed skin. Give me the broken world as it is, as it is. No transcendence, no gnosis. Give me the world as it is, as it is. No transcendence, no second sight. Give me the tunnel, the ending, the light.

Telegraphing 04:04
I found a point between the A and B. That’s where I made my strange discovery: There are no starts, no ends, and that would mean all that exists is simply in-between. Now it’s getting cold and the snow replaces sand. I could make it up to you if you give me a week or two. Promises don’t hold if they lack demand. Ride my bike out to the sea if you’ll stick around for me. And all the tides will change, and all the storms will rage, and how their souls will ache within this fragile space. Since you left, I haven’t bothered you at all. Things we’ll never know both protect and drive us mad. I can skate on ice so thin but you’re too cold for me to swim. Who’s to say it’s wrong if it’s never had? They say saltwater never quite freezes, but I think you might. And all the tides will change, and all the storms will rage, and how their souls will ache within this fragile space. All the lines are down. Telegraphing.

As the water freezes and the New Year falls past and dim, the home you’ve never seen is old and you are warmer there within. You light the stars and rid us of our scars. The wait ensues as we prepare the world for you. We see you from the sound and check the signs. It never is enough. We wonder who you are all of the time. But truly you are us. You’ll love the stars: so bright and flung so far. The night’s for you. And, yes, the day is, too. You are the stars...

Away 05:05 video
You say, “suck Satan’s cock” like it’s a bad thing, like it’s evil to be kind, when the devil never hurt nobody who wasn’t already left behind. You set such simple traps and I am grateful to be shaken in your arms, in your arms. You say, “let’s go away.” You say, “let’s go away.” I’m never gonna leave my body until you tell me to. You say, “let’s go away.” You say, “let’s go away.” I’m never gonna kneel to nothing until you tell me nothing is true. You say you see our future in a bad dream, but it’s sleeping that’s the crime. It’s a part, it’s a pact, it’s a pattern, it’s distraction from the time you are mine. You say, “let’s go away.” You say, “let’s go away.” I’m never gonna leave my body until you tell me to. You say, “let’s go away.” You say, “let’s go away.” I’m never gonna kneel to nothing until you tell me nothing is true. You raise a glass and say, “to hell with this and that, to hell with us,” and I’m inclined to join you. I’m inclined to never leave you. I’m inclined to always love you. You say, “let’s go away.”

about

Relapse is proud to present the debut album by Publicist UK, a post-punk band comprised of members of Municipal Waste, Revocation, Goes Cube, Discordance Axis, Burnt By The Sun and more. Sounding like Michael Gira on a Saul Bellow bender, Publicist UK are driven by the dark baritone of vocalist Zachary Lipez. With a cerebral, dark and at times infectious groove, Forgive Yourself is one of the most intriguing cross-genre debuts in many years.
